lobster woes
so. i need to tell you a story. one that is frightening. horrific.
a while back, a colleague of mine was going to travel up north to new england. yes. i know you are thinking the same thing, the land of the lobster.
if you are vegetarian, this is a horror story.
yada yada yada. i mentioned the lobster. i was sent an article about whether it is humane or not to cook lobster one way over another. blah blah blah. it mentions mating for life and all sorts of really sad ideas. let's just say, it affected me.
since then, i have pondered if i could get over my lobster issue.
so, digging through thomas' bookmarks to find interesting blogs, cause he finds some really cool stuff, and if i read you, you can thank thomas. he found you. pointed you out to me knowing i would fall in love and want to have your baby. anyway. i found this site. and today's feature sealed the deal for me.
no lobster for me. it is the waking up part that did it for me. the trying to save oneself. poor lobster. damn. lobster is tasty.

Lobster is tasty, but I don't think I'll be rushing out to store to buy any or ordering it in a restaurant anytime soon. They do mate for life and they also have long life spans (when not overfished).
Sometimes the most luxurious items on a menu are those that had to suffer the most to get there. Sad but true.
Bisous,
Amy (Ms. Glaze)

Here's the thing... it's all about faigh vs. science. Science tells us that the lobster has far too few nerves in its CNS for it to be able to interpret pain, and that its struggle is a survival instinct. Science tells us that pain is the cognitive interpretation that we mammals and other higher life forms have developed, and is our way of experiencing the warning signs that our bodies are being damaged.
Faith, on the other hand, is what we experience when we feel a lobster wriggling, and choose to interpret its struggle as an outward sign that it experiences pain like we do.
And most importantly, Lobster tastes good, and we are all here on this planet for a short time (humans, lobsters, dogs, giraffes... all of us) and we all struggle tooth and nail for survival and pleasure. Since we are people, and since we were each blessed with a large cortex, we win over the lobster, pain or not.
And that's all I have to say about that.
