so, i am trying to be more green.  now, whether you believe in global warming or not, you have noticed the high prices in gas.  that gas price causes lots of things to increase in price.

one way of helping the earth and the rising cost of things from the gas economy we live in is easy to do.  i have noticed the amount of people who still go to starbucks, who still make it a point to sit down for twenty or thirty minutes.  i am not going to tell you to stop, by all means, keep frequenting starbucks, but instead of getting your drink in a paper to-go cup, ask for it in a "for here" cup.  that is what they call it, "for here".  novel, no?

i do this every time i am going to cop a squat there.  some of the places (i think all are supposed to do it) also give you a discount for using an in-house cup (which is cheaper for them too).  i have decided to commit myself to carrying a travel mug to the store for those to-go orders.  they are more than willing to make the drink in the mug.

one cup at a time.  by the way, far more civilized to drink out of a real cup...

i just read...

a dirty job
i just read a dirty job by christopher moore.  now, this book is definitely not going to appeal to you unless you have a bit of a macabre sense of humor since the premise is about a single dad becoming "death".

the book makes some very funny jokes and overall, has quite the decent plot.  a lot of it is totally tongue in cheek.  the stereotypes of people gets a little tiring in the book here and there and is quite annoying at moments since it seems to be more of a deus ex machina when he has nothing else.

other than that, it was worth turning the pages.  i haven't decided if i am going to pick anything else of his up.  if i do, it will definitely be the stupidest angel.  anyone read that?

one of the satisfying things about making a baby quilt is how fast they go together.  by sheer nature, they are small.  this one did not go together so fast.  now, this has nothing to do with the pattern which was straightforward and easy.  no... it has to do with the fact that i bought material and picked a pattern that turned out to make a rather large lap size quilt.  oops.  which then led me to start from scratch with new and different fabric and a new pattern.

1.5"squares.JPGi decided to adjust the pattern a bit by rethinking the outside border.  i also did the crazy thing on this quilt of making it larger.  this is not hard to do.  it is just a matter of using those old algebra skills and making sure that everything adds up.  it never takes long to do.

the second crazy feature of this quilt is in the photo of the ironing board.  you see, i had all of these little 1.5" purple squares leftover.  and of course, i think to myself, wow, those, sewn together, would make the cutest inner border ever.  so, i sewed them together being very careful to not handle them too much since i wasn't sure if i was sewing on the stretch or not.

quilttop.JPG i like the way the colors come together, and i love how girly it is.  if you couldn't guess already, it is for a girl.  ; )  one of the sweeter features of the quilt is the back ground fabric which features flowers, butterflies and bumblebees.  i didn't fussycut this at all but on an occasion, there is a bumblebee perfectly placed in the square.  this totally tickles my fancy to the nth degree.  (there's that math again!)

i also have to admit.... i love that dark purple with the silver polka dot.  it is going to be the binding in the quilt.

now i have watched it 1000 times if not a million.  so we decided to try it this evening.  well t failed to do it.  i failed on my first attempt, but the second time, when i blew "with gusto" i was jumping up and down because out came the egg!  OMG that was the most fun ever.  now, when i make deviled eggs!!!  or egg salad, or anything that requires a bunch of eggs.... i have a fun way to peel them.
