what do you font?

recently we watched a documentary called helvetica.  i know what you are thinking, a documentary about a font does not sound appealing, but let me say, it was really good.

not only did it give you the history of the font, but it showed you where it is in our world, who uses it, what it tends to represent, and even now, as i am typing this, movable type has me typing in helvetica.

one of the things about the documentary that is so fascinating is the question of what does font/typeface represent to the people who use it.  and nothing is more powerful than when thomas put some work thing in helvetica the other day and got tons of compliments.  the power of font.

and this evening, i stumbled upon this, discussing the power of font for a student.  little side note, i force my students to submit in times new roman 12 and this article gives a fabulous hypothesis as to why i do this... and it even goes so far as to explain to me why i like georgia more than i like times new roman.  who knew that font meant so much?

being blog-worthy?

yesterday, we got three new movies from netflix.  i had switched the list around to have a range of movies that would be "appealing" to everyone involved, including roxie the dog.

one of the movies i had put in the queue was lady in the water.  now, i will mention before hand that i had already listened to a podcast called watching the directors.  i love this podcast and listen to it and their thoughts on different movies and directors.  i really enjoy it and they happened to feature shyamalan.  this movie was one of the movies in their discussion and i was already familiar with some of the major criticisms of this film.

about 30 minutes in... it was turned off.  i will finish it because i am a glutton for punishment or a masochist or isn't that the same thing?  ; )  anyway.  even if you let go and agree to the idea of the movie and agree to the story world that exists in it, it is quite boring.  there is one character that is more fascinating than any other, and she is just comical.

my suggestion is not to get this one unless you have decided to see every shyamalan movie out there.  or you are a masochist or a glutton for punishment or the same thing...

you just have to

if you do anything, then you have to at least breathe.  after that, you have to go see the new movie juno.

we went last night to see it and i must say, i have not laughed that hard, with tears streaming down my face, in a movie theatre in a long time.  the dialogue is so clever, the quips, the responses, the character development, all of it, it is hilarious.

this is not that touchy-feely movie, although there was a group of teenagers in the audience who added the appropriate "aahs" at the appropriate sappy moments, but those are few and far between.  it is an interesting perspective about being a teenager and a pregnant one at that.  it doesn't preach, it doesn't "educate" you, but it gives you a witty and funny look into some interesting characters.

go baby go

we went to the movies this evening to see gone baby gone.  this movie has been recommended to me by quite a few people.  now, you know this is an excellent movie if i refuse to get up to go pee half way through the thing.  i'm just saying.  i held it until the end.

i think the thing that pleased me about this movie was the perspective on truth.  normally i am all about character development in a movie but in this case, it is about perspective and how so many people can be right at the same time.  this ethical dilemma certainly gets me going and makes me realize why i agreed with so many different characters at the same time.

i will take a stand on one thing, i think you should go see the movie.

i just watched...

i just watched hard candy.  since the website is not quite what i have in mind, yet... i am doing all reviews here in a regular post.

so.  hard candy is an extraordinarily intense movie to watch.  it makes me think of closet land with its heavy dialogue, and well, not knowing who to feel for the most.  the cinematography is very well done which only adds to the intensity.

i know you are asking, what is so intense about it, and i would argue that for a guy, there is quite a bit that is intense, but as a girl, the dramatic pauses, the silence, the quiet, the holding your breath while you desperately seek any visual clue that you are constantly being denied.

i highly recommend this film but it is not for the light at heart.  it plays with you.  it challenges.  it hurts.  it is well done.

it's a good thing

Img_2863right now, the birds is on and thomas is asleep.  this is the most obvious statement i have ever written on this blog for several reasons.

1.  it is 947 and clearly, thomas is in bed at this time normally.

2.  thomas will not, under any circumstances, let me watch the birds in our house in his presence.

i admit that birds are scary.  i, for one, believe that chickens have it coming.  but i do not find this movie terrifying, just creepy.  very.  very creepy.

he, on the other hand, finds it down right scary.  maybe it is the flapping wings.

i'm bourne again!

Img_2719an evening with matt damon is not a bad way to spend some time.  and getting to do it while sitting next to your husband means you are one spoiled little lady!

so we went and saw the new bourne movie, the bourne ultimatum.  i must admit that i love these movies because the films are fun and fast paced.  but not overwhelming.

the only major problem i have is with the amount of violence that has me squirming in my seat and gasping every two or three minutes during the fight scenes.  i apparently can't take it.

overall, the movie advances the story and fills in the gaps.  it develops the character even more and gives him a quality of redemption, not that he didn't have it before.  but now, you know why he is who he is and how he got there.  and trust me, i am more than thankful that they didn't bring in the forced "love interest" that so many action, fast-paced films feel the need to create.

worth the full price admission and a lot of fun.

we went and saw shrek the third this evening.  why you ask?  because i LOVE going to the movies.

it was good.  not as good as the first, or the second, but it was good.  instead of telling you what it is, i am now going to tell you what it isn't because i am a negative kind of person...

it isn't as funny as it used to be because a lot of the jokes have been done.  it isn't as fun to sit through the whole thing because there isn't a huge dance number at the end, and let's face it, without that huge dance number, it isn't worth the 17.00 to get in.  it isn't the cutting edge digimation film of yester year.  (i wanted to say yester.)  it isn't a film with the wow factor and it isn't one that had us walking away laughing about that one line because we couldn't remember any.  oh and if you are going because of the timberlake/diaz thing, it isn't going to clue you in as to why they broke up.

B00005jph601_ss500_sclzzzzzzz_thomas and i went to the movies this afternoon to see little children, which i conveniently stole the movie poster from amazon.com.  thank you very much.

i must say that we both walked away really loving the movie and its rich dynamic cast.  it is clearly a movie about people who have kids and how their lives intersect with each others and the differences they have.

but the movie definitely leaves you with an eerie feeling.  is this just a snapshot of what life is like for everyone?  is there a message?  are we supposed to make a change or are we supposed to just continue living in the snapshot we created for ourselves?  there is no answer to this question or any other you can pose while watching the film, but nonetheless, it is compelling to watch.

amazingly enough, i feel for each and every one of the characters in the film as they struggle to deal with their lives.  the screen writer is quite talented at portraying them with subtleties and making them sympathetic on some level, to some degree.  i can see why this film got some oscar nods.

what if?

Img_2632i have to disclose something before i write this post.  otherwise, you could take my advice and see the movie and then possibly hate me for it.  so here is my disclosure:  i have a very high tolerance for films.

this means that i can sit through pretty much anything and watch it to the end.  i enjoy about 99% of all movies made.  there is nothing i can do about this.  i can differentiate between a good movie, a bad movie, a movie you would sit through and a movie i would sit through.  so.  if you follow my advice, and then yell at me because you disagree with my comments, you have no one to blame but yourself.

we went to the movies last night to see children of men.  now, i hadn't really heard anything about it and i knew it had clive owen (hhhhho-té).  now the premise is one that is not talked about much except in a handful of books: handmaid's tale, woman on the edge of time, children of men, etc.  but what if, what if the world went sterile?  what if  no babies were born?  what if it was only a matter of time for the world to go extinct, and all you can do is sit back and watch?
